DC Council approves streetcar wires on H Street

The D.C. Council made way for the first leg of a 37-mile trolley system Tuesday, passing legislation to allow the use of overhead wires along Benning Road and H Street NE.

VRE begins operating under new management

Virginia Railway Express has a new operator. Amtrak has operated VRE trains since the system started in 1992, but Keolis Rail Services America, the U.S. subsidiary of a French company, takes over on Monday. VRE has a five-year, $85 million contract with Keolis with options to extend the contract.

Arlington accepts East Falls Chuch Plan

After two-and-a-half hours of citizen input and deliberation, the Arlington County Board voted 5-0 this afternoon to “accept” the East Falls Church Study Plan developed over the last three years by the East Falls Church Task Force. By “accepting,” as opposed to adopting the plan, County Board Chair Jay Fisette said that while the study has been “handed off” from the task force to the county government, the deliberations on the specific makeup of many details of the plan will remain open for public and official county input over the next four to six months before being finally adopted.

Massive Crown Farm development picking up steam

Plans for the embattled Crown Farm development could come before the Gaithersburg mayor and council as early as this fall, city officials report. The billion-dollar project, which was stalled in mid-2009 after the developers filed for bankruptcy, can begin to move again now that Crown Village Farm, LLC, emerged from Chapter 11 proceedings last month. Development plans have already been approved, but some changes still have to be made to the right of way along Sam Eig Highway and in some neighborhoods affected by the proposed route for the Corridor Cities Transitway

Baileys Crossroads to be redeveloped with streetcar

Baileys is one of seven commercial districts that Fairfax has targeted for redevelopment. County officials say they hope to remake the communities into walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods served by mass transit. By 2040, most of the area could be a town center-style neighborhood with tree-lined streets, sidewalk cafes, and clusters of apartments and offices above retail stores. Baileys would have two stops along the route of a planned streetcar connecting the area to Arlington County. The densest development would be in areas near the transit stations.

Costs to operate transit are rising
