Jane Jacobs, matron saint of urbanism, is dead this morning at the age of 89. Jacobs literally wrote the book on cities. It is thanks to her that concepts such as mixed-use, short blocks and intimate streets emerged from the shadows of urban renewal era modernism and took hold once more in American planning.

We’ll miss you, Jane.
