Jane Jacobs, matron saint of urbanism, is dead this morning at the age of 89. Jacobs literally wrote the book on cities. It is thanks to her that concepts such as mixed-use, short blocks and intimate streets emerged from the shadows of urban renewal era modernism and took hold once more in American planning.
We’ll miss you, Jane. |

Metro service to Mid-City is about to get a whole lot better. WMATA announced yesterday that next January it will begin running off-peak Yellow line trains through Columbia Heights to Fort Totten, effectively doubling midday service in Washington’s densest collection of neighborhoods. Additionally, off-peak Red line trains that currently end at Grosvenor will continue all the way to Shady Grove. Montgomery County doesn’t yet need the added service as much as Mid-City, but the deal was politically necessary.
BeyondDC can’t wait for the day we’ll be able to take a Yellow train to the new Target department store in Columbia Heights. |

Just a quick clue-in to the reasonably lively discussion that has popped up in the comments section of our newsfeed regarding the plan to bring Metro to BWI. Head over and tell us what you think. For the sake of keeping everything in one place, please keep your comments on the subject in that existing thread, rather than starting a new one here on the main page. |

It wouldn’t be spring time in Washington without hordes of photo sets dedicated to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. BeyondDC does our part with a collection of 49 frames from around the Tidal Basin, taken Sunday, April 2. Keep your eyes peeled for a celebrity sighting in one shot. |

The Washington area typically doesn’t have as much representation in the online world of city geekdom as other major cities. DC talk is practically absent from the most popular planning and architecture forums on the net. But despite that fact, it’s not like Washingtonians have nothing to say.
Oh, do we have things to say.
There is in fact an array of great web sites out there dedicated to local urbanity. At BeyondDC we’d like to redesign our links page around them, and maybe create a common “Urban DC” badge for authors to include on their own site if they so choose. Below are some of the sites we at BeyondDC are familiar with. If you know of any others, please do give us a link in the comments section.
